Transcript:
Have you ever been confused when talking to someone because they are saying one thing and doing another? I have a smart tip that will help you communicate more clearly and more consistently. Have you ever been in a conversation with someone and sensed something wasn’t quite right and you say “What’s wrong?” and they say “Nothing”! Do we believe that? No. When people are telling us something and their nonverbals don’t match what they are saying, which do we believe? The nonverbals. In fact, when someone’s nonverbals don’t match their verbals, 55% of what we believe is based on what they are doing with facial expressions, gestures, and body language. 38% is based on their tone of voice or how they say something. Only 7% is based on the actual content of what we say. Let’s do an experiment. Follow my instructions. Make the “ok” sign. Make the “V” sign. Scratch your head. Make the “ok” sign. Put it on your chin. Did you put it on your cheek? Did you put it on your chin? Did you feel like you didn’t know where to put it? People will follow what you do…your nonverbals, not what you say. So it’s very important, especially in business, to make sure your nonverbals match your verbals. I’m Dr. Patty Malone, communication speaker, corporate trainer, and professor of DrPattyMalone.com. Thanks for watching my smart tip!
